ARTIST IN RESIDENCE: INKY

Thursday, May 27th, 2010

We are proud to introduce, Inky, the latest graduate artist to join us here at Tout Nouveau. Inky studied degree level Art at Leeds University and continues to produce mesmerising pieces of artistry from the confines of her Leeds apartment. Her latest showpiece ‘Untitled’ is an original oil painting on canvas and will grace the white walls, sorry, laptop screens of Tout Nouveau followers everywhere when it is released in our online store later this year. We wanted to find out more and so tempted this tea-loving artisan with jam and scones in return for a few quick questions. Read on to learn more about Inky and her work…

RW: What was your inspiration for this piece?

INKY: A boy.

RW: What materials were used?

INKY: An old Mills and Boon book and paint.

RW: How long did the piece take from conception to completion?

INKY: Aaaages!!! I didn’t really time it. Honestly I don’t even know if it’s finished yet!?

RW: Why did you select ‘Mother of the Bride’ as the background to the painting?

INKY: Mills and Boon books are fantasy – a girl with a hare’s head is obviously fantasy. It didn’t really matter what the book was about, it was just playing upon the idea of being whatever someone wants you to be. Are they disappointed when they realise you’re not who they think you are? Do they see this identity as a mask or more importantly, do you yourself? People are always changing, how we portray ourselves to others is completely a reflection of our inner self and sometimes that can be misconstrued. It’s all about perspective.

RW: How do you feel about people interpreting your painting?

INKY: Interested! It’s always good and sometimes surprising to hear what people think my work is about. Sometimes I don’t know what it’s about myself until taking a good time away from it.

RW: Where is home to you?

INKY: Where the heart is?! That is Leeds for now.

RW: How and when did you develop your passion for art?

INKY: Art has always been in me, but like most things though, a passion can wane or become stronger depending on where you are in your life. I guess it’s easier to say I’m always developing.

RW:  How would you describe your style of work?

INKY: Manipulated.

RW: What projects are you currently working on?

INKY: On several pieces when I get chance!! Usually a painting or drawing of some sort.

RW: What are your pet peeves?

INKY: Lack of time annoys me greatly.

RW: Your favorite artist?

INKY: Egon Shiele / Mucha

RW: What tools do you use to create your work?

INKY: My hands, sometimes my brain is involved too…paint, pencil, ink.

RW: Who would you like to work with in the future?

INKY: I’m not one for collaboration; I’m too headstrong when it comes to art.

RW: What inspires you?

INKY: My friends, random strangers on the street, books, music, films.

RW: What is your second love, after art?

INKY: The people in my life.

RW: What do you like to do in your spare time?

INKY: I’m becoming quite interested in Burlesque, and I’m a pretty good baker in my spare time too. Entertaining friends, watching movies… yadda yadda yadda!!!

RW: Favourite Place?

INKY: Any park on a sunny day…or in a teashop scribbling doodles.

Inky’s first submission ‘Untitled’ will be available for purchase upon launch of the Tout Nouveau online store in AW 2010. We welcome your comments about this piece.

‘Combo’: A Blu and David Ellis Collaboration

Wednesday, May 19th, 2010

This post is the first in a series where we invite you to question, what is art? A well-trodden debate it may be but as boundaries become forced and art-forms fused, this question circumnavigates the industry.

Bologna street artist Blu, in a collaborative video with David Ellis, forces the viewer to question the medium of street art as they push stop-motion animation and street art into an ephemeral arena.

In a world where we believe art to be timeless, an item intended to be preserved and protected; Blu forces us to question what art really is. In Blu’s world the motion-painting is captured via film transforming his thoughtful ingenuity into a work of fleeting genius.

Sugar Skull Sweats by Daisy Shayler-Webb

Monday, May 3rd, 2010

Recently, Tout Nouveau had a photoshoot with upcoming fashion designer, Daisy Shayler-Webb. Daisy is in her second year studying BA (Hons) Fashion Design at Leeds College of Art, and will soon be supplying her luxurious sweater collection to the Tout Nouveau store.

Daisy’s designs combine minimal casual-wear with vibrant and intricate embroidery and her latest collection, ‘Sugar Skull Sweats’, takes inspiration from the Mexican holiday ‘Day of the Dead’. On this day, food and gifts, including Sugar Skulls, are offered to the deceased in remembrance, and private altars are created in celebration of past lives.

The spirit of the festival is captured in these images taken from the shoot, where the vivid colours of the clothing combine with the sombre facepaint to create a juxtaposed ambience of stills.

Following the shoot, Tout Nouveau interrogated the wonderfully weird Daisy Shayler-Webb, whose obsession with the dead appears to transcend beyond her designs:

AD:  Where is home to you?

DS:  I have two homes – Dorking is my “proper” home, where I know my Mum will always cook me dinner. I also live in Leeds, which is my first home away from home. If I had my way though, San Francisco would be home!

AD:  How and when did you develop your passion for fashion design?

DS:  I have always had an interest in clothes, ever since I started refusing to let my parents dress me as a child. I had a very creative upbringing and was constantly drawing people. I would get bored with the clothes people wore and start drawing my own, so I guess designing came naturally. It wasn’t something I all of a sudden decided to do.

AD:  How would you describe your own fashion style?

DS:  Chaotic! Probably a bit horrendous as well – I love my lycra!

AD:  Where is your favourite place to shop?

DS: American Apparel

AD:  Where do you shop for materials?

DS: Fabworks in Dewsbury – the guys in there are incredible and will help you find anything. They have end-of-line fabrics, furnishing fabrics, Velcro in most colours, lots of random odd things and the prices are student-friendly.

AD:  What projects are you currently working on?

DS:  Alongside developing my own fashion brand, I am involved with doing the costumes and styling for a short film about a circus. It’s turning into a huge project, but should be amazing if we manage to pull it off!

I also draw illustrations for my Auntie’s card and stamp-making company. And for fun, I am making horror inspired cupcakes for a graphics and illustration exhibition launch in Brighton.

AD:  Name three of your favourite fashion designers.

DS:  Noki, Alexander McQueen and Comme des Garcons.

AD:  Whom would you most like to work with in the future?

DS: I love doing collaboration projects – I never think someone should be limited to one skill. Working with illustrators to create a pattern or another designer, such as Noki, to create something completely new. I like Noki for his use of recycling; using something you already have and creating something completely new is inspiring to me – especially as we all now need to save the planet.

AD:  What else inspires you?

DS: Anything! Life, films, music, colour, art, people, glitter, horror, beauty, life, death.

AD:  What is your second love, after fashion?

DS: Horror Films!

AD: And finally, what do you like to do in your spare time?

DS: Watch horror films, surround myself with people, play dress up, eat, jump in puddles and be a child, make cakes, go to the Tate Modern, have a bath, be completely lazy and do absolutely nothing!

This is the first in a series of three behind-the-scenes blog posts of Daisy’s photoshoot. Check back for more updates.
